Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Sports Trust (PST) will give a grant of Rs 22.10 million to the top 15 sports federations to enhance the standard of the games in the country, PST chairman Lt Gen (r) Syed Arif Hasan told reporters at the Pakistan Sports Complex here on Friday.Arif, who is also president of the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA), said the PST had distributed Rs 12.30 million among the officials of hockey, wrestling, swimming, weightlifting, judo, karate, cycling, tennis, table tennis, badminton, football, boxing, cycling, shooting, rowing, squash, athletics, skiing, sailing, taekwondo, wushu, gymnastics, golf, kabaddi, volleyball and billiards and snooker in February 2006.“The grant of additional Rs 22.10 million will be released in different phases among the federations of wrestling, weightlifting, judo, karate, cycling, table tennis, badminton, squash, boxing, shooting, athletics, taekwondo, wushu, kabaddi and volleyball. This support will help federations to lift the standard of the games,” he added. He made it clear that audit would be held of this financial help and federations would be made accountable for their performance in the international competitions. Arif said a commercial sponsor would be provided to each sport played in the country while Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) would be approached for financial help to Olympic sports.Arif hoped that Pakistani athletes would perform well in the forthcoming international sports galas – South Asian Games and Doha Games – this year. He urged the office-bearers of the federations to work tirelessly for promotion of their respective sports. Arif said the grant and facilities of all those federations would be stopped who failed to produce results. “How can we continue our support to the federations who are not interested in providing results,” he questioned. To a query, Arif said the disputes in various federations had been resolved and now they were running smoothly. “However, there are couples of cases in the courts and they will be settled soon.”He said the standard of sports in the country would improve gradually. “We have put the Pakistan sports on the right track,” he concluded.
