GB call-up for Ryan
A MEMBER of the Goole Judo Club has received a Great Britain call-up, rating him among the best in the country.
Ryan Robertshaw of Bradford, who travels 40-miles to Goole to train, has been selected to represent Great Britain at the 32nd International Judo Tournament, Venray, Holland on June 10. The 12-year-old came second in last year's Junior Nationals to earn enough points to put him among the best four fighters at his age group and weight in the country. He will compete at under 34 kilos in Holland against the best fighters from around the world. But judo coach John Burkill has said he hopes Ryan's call-up is the first of many Goole fighters representing their country. He said: "My target is to get four on the GB squad by the end of the year, which I think we can do as we have the best fighters in Yorkshire. "I also want to get one to the Olympics in London in 2012. "Ryan will face tough competition out in Holland and a lot will depend on the draw. "He has also stepped up from u30k to u34k which is another step up for him but if he continues to improve he will do very well." John's high hopes to represent GB are Bradley Walker, Dane Mitchell and Adam Stevens.
