Judo / All eyes turn to Arik Ze'evi as Israeli medal hopefuls fail to deliver in Finland
By Rami Hipsh Israeli hopes rest on Arik Ze'evi's shoulders once more after a disappointing weekend for the Israeli delegation at the European Championship in Tampere, Finland. Yoel Razvozov, the silver medalist in the under 73 kg category at the previous two championships, carried high hopes, but went out on points to Victor Bivol of Moldova in the first round after a close bout. The Moldovan won by a waza-ari and a yuko to Razvozov's yuko and koka. Gal Yekutiel had hoped to improve on seventh at last year's championship, but a tough draw pitted him against World No. 2 Ludwig Paischer of Austria, who won the bout by two waza-aris. Paischer made the semifinals sending Yekutiel through to the repechage round and a chance at a bronze medal, but the Israeli failed to seize his chance, losing to Latvia's Albert Techov.
The only Israeli to win over the weekend was Alon Sasson in the under 90 kg class. Sasson, the European U20 champion, won his first round bout against a Hungarian opponent but then lost to eventual bronze medalist Roberto Meloni of Italy. In the women's competition Alice Schlesinger, celebrating her 18th birthday, went out in the first round in the under 63kg category to the eventual silver medalist Lucie Decosse of France. While Schelsinger and Sason traveled to Finland to gain experience, nothing had been expected of Avisar Scheinman, Zvi Shifran and Sivan Mizrahi who all lost in the first round. Arik Ze'evi with European three gold medals and a silver under his belt will aim for a fourth title when he takes to the mat today. Fonte: http://www.haaretz.com/
