Guwahati, May 29: Assam boasts of having abundant potential in judo, but the state will have to bank entirely on outstation recruits for medals in the 33rd National Games.
Barring junior international Joyshree Hazarika, the All Assam Judo Association will have to turn to outstation recruits to stitch the state team for the mega event scheduled for October.
While neighbours Manipur and Mizoram have already begun coaching and conditioning camps for their respective state teams for the Games, the Assam body faces paucity of funds for holding similar camps. It plans to hold an open selection trial to recruit outstation judokas as soon as the state government comes out with a notification on cash incentives for Games medalists.
Several leading judokas of the country, including Brojeswari Devi, Tombi Devi, Kalpana Devi and Gompi Chanu of the CRPF and Binit Singh and Vikram Solanki of the BSF are willing to represent Assam, association adviser Banee Brata Das said.
Das said a three-month coaching-cum-conditioning camp would be held after the proposed trials, “subject to the co-operation of the government as far as funds are concerned”. He said further coa-ching for existing state probables would not be advisable because medal prospects among seniors were “very thin”.
The need for advanced coaching had been voiced by Hazarika, the only local medal prospect, during a recent interaction with the media.
