Week-end Training Camp for Hibernians Judo Club by di-ve.com
Tuesday, 11 April, 2006 During the long weekend at the end of March, another, of the now regular, weekend training camps was organized by the Hibernians Budokwai Judo Club Manager and Coach, Mario Cardona. Friday 31 March, found an eager batch of Hibernians Budokwai Judo Club Judokas, together with a sprinkling of athletes from other clubs, at Kordin, where they met up at the early hour of 8.30am to go to the Soreda Hotel which hosted the event. The younger Judokas were accompanied by their parents, who were more than ready to take advantage of the proposed 'weekend break'. On arriving there, before they were even allocated rooms, the Judokas were started off with a training session - just to get them into the right frame of mind. After duly settling into their rooms, a hearty, and excellent, lunch was followed by some free time during which, whilst some of the older members had a quiet rest, the younger members played card and other games slightly noisily, as befits youngsters of their age who have yet to learn volume control. Another two hour training session was then scheduled. This was ably coached by Joe Castillo enabling the judokas to have different perspectives with regard to techniques. Having suitably tired out the athletes for the day, free time was allocated for rest and this was followed by an abundant, and once more excellent, dinner. The youngsters then all retired into one of the apartments to noisily play some more games, whilst the parents gathered into another apartment for coffee and biscuits. At around midnight silence, except for the snoring, began to reign. The second day started with the now infamous physical and jogging session for both the athletes and any of the parents who were up to it. Two ninety minute Judo training session were scheduled duly punctuated by some resting time, a hearty breakfast and abundant lunch. Another of the now regular features much awaited by athletes and parents was scheduled after the last session of the day. This was the Treasure Hunt, another name for very long fast walks done in limited time with taxation of the brains and muscles as extra bonuses to get through the various tasks assigned and extremely great fun. Lots of laughter and ambition showed through with some people going to great lengths to win, and some enthusiastic fun squabbling (amongst the adults believe it or not) took place as to what was acceptable and what was not when the time came to count the points gained. Another abundant dinner was followed by an evening of fun and games, ably organized for the youngsters by Ritienne Bondin, in the makeshift dojo. Refreshments were served and a hearty effort was made to continue to tire out any of the youngsters who still had some energy in them. All had a great time. Thereby ended the second day of the training camp and all were more than ready for their bed, even though none would admit it and all tried hard to keep on talking through the night with the friends sharing their room. Sunday was the third and final day of the training camp. The usual jogging and physical session was followed by breakfast after which came the last training session. The dojo was then converted into a makeshift chapel where Holy Mass was very kindly celebrated by Fr Joe Portelli who always comes up especially to perform this service for us. After lunch the fathers and adult judokas helped to transport the Tatami back to its club and some very tired out people very sadly left their weekend home to go back home. And so ended another very successful Hibernians Budokwai Judo Club training camp with everyone already asking when the next one was due to occur.
