Satinder’s absence casts shadow over judo trials

Express News Service
New Delhi, April 10: The atmosphere at the trials for the forthcoming Asian Junior Judo Championship held Sunday at IG Stadium was sober.
Apparently, the participants were missing Satinder Kumar who was recently done to death by some miscreants at the SAI hostel in Hisar. “Had he been alive, he could have surely fought for a place in the camp,” said Judo Federation of India (JFI) secretary Mukesh Kumar.
Last year, in the 66 kg category, Satinder had represented the country in the Asian meet held at Chinese Taipei but this time it will be Delhi’s Manjit Nandal who topped the list in the boys’ 66kg.
He will be among the 14 judokas selected for the preparatory camp beginning from April 14 at Bangalore for the Asian competition to be held in Korea from May 14. The venue for the girls camp will be Mumbai.
Officials say chances are bright in the girls group that too in the lower weight category. However, the officials don’t want to make any predictions.
