Twenty members of the Campbell River Judo Club were in Nanaimo over the weekend for the 2006 Vancouver Island Open Judo Tournament and nearly half of them came home with medals. The nine medals garnished were significant in the fact that for many of the competitors, this was their first ever meet outside Campbell River.Carl Hruby was a gold medalist, winning three straight matches to claim the top prize in the 12/13 boys’ 60kg class.Nash Oostenbroek continued his golden season, adding another to his trophy case, this time in the 12/13 boys’ advanced -56kg division. Daylan Gruzsie won the bronze medal in the same division.Rounding out the 12/13 age group medal haul was John Adams, who won bronze in the 66kg weight class. The younger CRJC members had remarkable meets, with a total of five medals gained in the 11 and under age group.Jacob Sluggett led the way, with a gold medal in the -39kg division.Trace Stevenson won silver in the –39kg class and three CRJC members won bronze medals.Daniel Henry fought in two classes and collected a bronze in the -46kg event.Ryder Huggins battled through some stiff competition to win bronze in the -33kg weight class and Justin Chaisin won bronze in the -30kg novice division. The club instructors were all very impressed with the students’ performances. This test really showed how well the kids have been learning in class and being able to apply their throws in competition. The club is in Powell River this weekend for a practice and the final mini competition of the season.
