New judo club looks forward to bright future A judo club has been running in Roscommon for some time. Members have represented the county successfully all over Ireland.
Judo is an Olympic sport. It is growing enormously and is becoming a high profile sport in Ireland. Roscommon has now amalgamated with Ballygar Judo Club. The brainchild of Bridget McCabe, Hon Komichi Kan Ballygar/Roscommon Judo Club is looking forward to plenty of success in the future.“We’re very excited about this development. Up to now, these competitors found it hard to get recognition for their efforts. That’s going to change,” said Bridget McCabe. The club would like to encourage adult members to come on board. Everyone is an individual. People take up judo for many different reasons – fitness, fun, some like to compete in tournaments, learn technique or get a qualification and grading belts, take part in various courses, have a chance to be scouted for Ireland squads.Essentially Judo can accommodate everybody’s needs. Hon Komichi Kan Ballygar/Roscommon Judo Club is the only club locally qualified to bring members to such a high standard. It is fully insured and affiliated to Judo Ireland. The club has the luxury of the country’s top trainers. New permanent coaches are being supplied by Judo Ireland.Training takes place in Ballygar sports hall. It is a wonderful, modern facility equipped with comfortable changing rooms, showers and a weights room. A training gym will be opening shortly. The club would like to thank Future Paving, Creggs for moving equipment. They also gave the club financial sponsorship at the beginning of this new venture. The club also wishes to thank Padraig Harlow, now retired from Hon Komichi Kan, for his expert coaching over the years.Without his help and dedication, there would have been very little acknowledgement of judo over the years. The club chose Ballygar for its training base in an effort to bring a fine new facility and opportunity to a country town. The club is hopeful that local people will show their support and view it as a new community facility, an opportunity to try something different and, most important of all, enjoy judo.
Hon Komichi Kan Ballygar/Roscommon Judo Club hopes to recruit new members from local schools, particularly St. Mary’s College, Ballygar. It will become a centre of excellence for judo.Training will take place on Wednesday, April 19th in Ballygar sports hall. The times are as follows: Juniors, 8-9 p.m.; Seniors, 9-10 p.m.. From Thursday, April 27th, training will take place on Thursdays at the same times.
