Judo – Birmingham World Cup

Montreal, April 1st, 2006 (Sportcom) – Judoka Maryse Guilbault did well in her World Cup debut on Saturday, in Birmingham, England, coming in seventh in the under-57 kg category.

In the tournament, the Sainte-Julie athlete started by beating British opponent Janine Johnson in the preliminary round after scoring a Yuko, while her adversary was able to manage only a Koka by the end of the regulation five-minute match.

“I took a penalty, I left the mat at the beginning,” Guilbault explained. “So I spent the match coming from behind. Toward the end, though, I was able to score a Yuko.”

Still in the preliminary round, Guilbault, who is studying at Université du Québec à Montréal to be a phys-ed teacher, was then the victim of a Yuko and a Koka by French competitor Irène Chevreuil.

“I had trouble with my positioning,” said the left-handed Guilbault. “I had a hard time getting my left hand in a good position. I managed one or two good attacks, but they weren’t enough.”

In the repechage, Russian Arina Alexandrova put an end to Guilbault’s journey by scoring an ippon after one minute and 14 seconds on the tatami. Still, the Quebecer, who is with the Shidokan Club, had enough time to score a Koka against her Russian opponent.

“This time, I was able to position my left hand properly,” Guilbault noted. “She moved backward and off the mat. But once again, in the defensive grip, she got me. She counter gripped one of my sleeves and threw me.”

“I did a lot of good things during the day,” said the university student. “But I really have to work on my defensive grip to become more dominant. I’m happy, even though my goal was two wins.”

Chinese judoka Yaling Yu beat Sheila Espinosa Abrev of Cuba in the final for the gold medal win.

Meanwhile, Jennie Bonsant of Charlesbourg had a relatively short work day, after losing by ippon to Norwegian Esther Myreboe after one minute, 23 seconds in the under-63 kg category.

On Sunday, Beauport native Catherine Roberge squares off against Elisa Schmidtke of Germany in her first match in the under-70 kg group.
