JUDO SEASON TO BEGIN SATURDAY

By ROBERT COLLIAS, Staff Writer

PUKALANI – As the fourth Maui Interscholastic League judo season dawns Saturday, the teams appear to have matured.
Saturday will be the first of five meets held on consecutive Saturdays – with weigh-ins at 8:30 a.m. and competition beginning at 10 – at King Kekaulike gym.
Maui High School is the defending MIL championship team for boys and girls and both appear able to do it again as the Sabers have a total of 59 athletes on the collective rosters.
Sabers coach Glenn Agunat said about 40 competitors have been regulars at practice, led by a boys team that is loaded with talent.
“For the girls, I would say it is wait and see who will win (this year),’’ Agunat said. “For the boys, nobody has a better team than me. That is my feeling.’’
The Sabers boys are led by seniors Treaven Maluafiti-Buendia at 220 pounds, Sean Enovijas at 178, J.J. Dollopac at 161 and Fernand Baldonado at 145.
Maluafiti-Buendia won a fifth-place medal at state last year at 220 in his first year in the sport and is coming off an MIL heavyweight championship in wrestling.
“It is nice to have the weights covered like that for the boys,’’ Agunat said. “I would say the quality of the sport in the MIL is still growing and I think my senior boys leaders are all potential state medalists.’’
The only MIL girl judoka to return after having won a state medal last season is St. Anthony’s Kelcie Suda, who was fifth last year at 97 pounds. Suda is a three-time MIL wrestling champion.
While the total numbers are large at Maui High, the rest of the league may be down somewhat in numbers. That, however, is not a bad thing for many of the coaches.
“This is the fourth year and I think the overall numbers had gone up each of the last couple years,’’ King Kekaulike coach Claude Moreau said. “This season, I am discouraging the casual kids who were just going to show up when they feel like it. Each of my kids are serious about it because we signed contracts where they have to show up so many times for practice or they don’t compete. Judo is not a sport that you can do on a casual basis, at least not at this level.’’
Some of the athletes that Moreau will be counting on include Auston Marsteller at 161 and Cody Mendoza at 145. Two newcomers – sophomores Tony Carroll and Jordan Parker – have also shown potential for Na Alii.
The meet schedule has also grown to five after being just three weeks when the sport started in the league. The MIL championships are set for May 6 at Maui High gym. The state tournament is the last one on the Hawaii High School Athletic Association calendar on May 20 on Oahu.
