(Northglenn, Colo.) - More than 250 judo players participated in the Northglenn Judo Championships, a USA Judo Senior E Level Points Tournament, April 7 at Northglenn High School in Northglenn, Colo.
Among the competitors were two teams of legally blind athletes, including a cast of Paralympians, from the United States and Great Britain.
The two teams are participating in a training camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and this event served as part of the U.S. qualifying process for participation in the International Blind Sports Association World Championships, June 29-July 3 in Brommat, France.
In addition to competing in the senior divisions, a best-of-three fight-off also was held between Athens Paralympian Scott Jones (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Judo Center) and Andre Watson (Upper Darby, Pa./Liberty Bell) in the 90kg division.
Jones, who also competed at the 2003 World Championships, won the first fight by three yukos (quarter-point) while Watson came back in the second match, countering the veteran’s drop seoi nage (low shoulder throw) to win by ippon (instant win) in 57 seconds.
In the third match Watson led with a yuko before getting thrown for waza-ari (half-point) with a minute remaining. Less than 10 seconds later Watson hit a maki komi (winding throw) for ippon and a spot on the World Team.
Seven visually impaired athletes garnered medals at the event, including bronze medals by Athens silver medalist Lori Pierce (Arvada, Colo./Northglenn Judo Club/70kg), Maxine Ingram (GBR/Santani Judo/63kg), Sara Parson (Springdale, Ark./Landolt Ju-Jitsu Academy/+78kg) and Johann Shockency (Andover, Minn./Bemidji Judo+100kg).
Simon Jackson (GBR/Rockdale Judo/73kg), a four-time Paralympian and two-time gold medalist, showed that he is still in top form, going 4-2 to win bronze, dropping his semi-final match to Michael Eldred (Fruitland, Idaho/Western Idaho Judo Institute), Irish Open silver medalist, and working his way through the repechage to fight for second.
Meanwhile, Eduardo Novoa (CHI/Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Olympic Training Center USA Judo National Training Site), defeated Eldred by two yukos and a koka in the final to send him down to the silver-bronze match and another meeting with Jackson.
Eldred came out victorious again, pinning Jackson for the win.
Myles Porter (Toledo, Ohio/University of Toledo/100kg) was the final visually impaired athlete to come home with hardware, also winning bronze in his division.
After losing his opening match to World Team member Djamaldin Aliev (Greenwood Village, Colo./European Judo), 20-year-old Porter first defeated 2006 San Jose Buddhist Memorial gold medalist Joseph Aceto (San Jose, Calif./San Jose State University) and then quickly armbarred 2006 High School Nationals silver medalist Alex Gonnov (Denver, Colo.).
Next, Porter fought former nationally ranked player Tim Wilson (Monument, Colo.), scoring first with a koka (smallest points), then throwing Wilson for waza-ari and ending the match with a pin for ippon.
In the silver-bronze match, Porter met Ian Rose (GBR/Mickelfield Judo) who had lost in the final match to Aliev. Rose, a 1996 Paralympic bronze medalist, threw the newcomer for ippon to win silver.
The men’s and women’s heavyweight divisions each were won by #2-ranked seniors with Heidi Moore (Englewood, Colo./Denver Judo) and Daniel McCormick (Arlington, Texas/Bedford Kodokan Judo) each going undefeated in their round robin division with all wins by ippon.
In the men’s 81kg division, Mongolian Bandi Davaadorj (Aurora, Colo./Denver Judo) won gold after Raindi Aliev (Greenwood Village, Colo./European Judo) received a hansoku-make (disqualification) and was ejected from the match. Aliev dropped down to the silver-bronze match which he forfeited to Eric Sanchez (West Covina, Calif./Nanka/Guerros).
Anna Palmer (Colorado Springs, Colo./Olympic Training Center USA Judo National Training Site) won her first senior tournament of the year at 52kg, picking up three wins by ippon. En route, Palmer defeated 26-year-old Stephanie Baim (Carrollton, Texas/Dallas Judo), a 1994 U.S. Open Champion with an armbar.
Baim won silver in the division and makes her first appearance on the senior roster in 10 years.
Palmer’s OTC teammates Felipe Novoa (CHI/Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Josh O'Neil (Colorado Springs, Colo.) each went undefeated to advance to the final – a rematch of the Collegiate Nationals final two weeks ago in Tinley Park, Ill.
Novoa dominated that match, scoring with koka, yuko and waza-ari before throwing O’Neil for ippon.
O’Neil then won his silver-bronze medal match by waza-ari over 19-year-old Jeff Fong (The Woodlands, Texas/Diamondback Judo).
Eighth-ranked Landry Ambouroue (North Richland, Texas/Ruben Martin Judo) won 90kg decisively, claiming all wins by ippon, including a spectacular throw with harai goshi (sweeping hip throw) of Otari Sadov (RUS/Pomona, Calif./Nanka/Pomona Judo) in the final.
Katie Sell (Oshkosh, Wis./Welcome Mat Judo/70kg), competed in one last event before the Junior Pan American Championships, April 13-14 in Colorado Springs, defeating Pierce and Jane Lock (Colorado Springs, Colo./Olympic Training Center USA Judo National Training Site) to win the division.
