NEW rules, weight divisions and tournament structure did not deter the Gisborne Judo Club from producing outstanding results at the East Coast Area championships in Napier.
The East Coast champs are the first of various area tournaments as local judoka prepare for the North Island champs here in early August.
The women’s team of six, brought home 10 medals. Joy Williams wasted little time on her return from overseas in showing she has not lost any form.
Williams, a great role model for the club’s younger members, won the senior women’s under-70kg and open divisions
Patti Grogan, medalled in four divisions — the intermediate under-63kg combined division and open and the junior women’s u63kg and open classes, winning the intermediate and junior titles.
Melissa McMillan and Erin Campbell, fighting in their new divisions are warming up for a successful year ahead of them, both taking medals in their respective divisions.
The club’s youngest competitior, Tara Smith showed her potential with an outstanding win in the 11-14yrs open division.
Judy Smith may not have medalled but she put up a gutsy effort against more experienced players.
The male judokas were all in fine form winning medals in various divisions.
Head coach Jason King led the charge with wins in the senior men’s u81kg and open divisions.
Tayler Reid in his first away tournament made heads turn with his gallant effort to take silver in his weight category. Tim Smith, a double medallist in his weight and open events also put his name in lights.
