Lakeland's Brian Germain of Gym Etc. earned a gold and silver medal last weekend from the National Judo Championships in Houston.Germain won gold in the 45-49, 100 kg division and took a silver in the 45-49 open division.Germain was in the zone, but was perhaps overconfident in his last Open match when he overthrew himself against opponent Jeff Steel, whom he has topped twice before, thus losing a point and giving Steel a point and the win."I had one of my best days in Judo going," said Germain. "I started this match as I did the previous four with strong grips and a strong attack. I came in fully committed, but missed reaping his leg. I didn't even realize it until I followed through so hard that I threw myself. "Germain will take some time off and focus on getting his youngsters ready for summer competitions like the Sunshine State Games, Junior Nationals and Junior U.S. Open in July.
"I want to make sure they fight their best and never miss reaping their opponent's leg like I did."
