The Vernon and Lake Country Judo Clubs pocketed 18 medals as they co-hosted the annual B.C. Open Judo Tournament Saturday at the Vernon Curling Club.
A total of 160 athletes from B.C. and Alberta competed, including 21 from the Vernon and Lake Country clubs.
"Many of the novice entrants were competing outside the club for their first time," said Aubrey Comley, one of the event organizers. “We're very happy with the volunteers, athletes and coaches that made this event happen."
In the Senior Novice division, Dan Curtis (heavyweight), Scott Ferguson (middleweight) and Raja Kler (lightweight) struck gold.
Gold medals also went to Novice Boys’ Tyler Riva, Jeff Carey and Keenan Carey.
Lucas Van Stone earned silver medals in Intermediate Senior and Junior Men lightweight classes, while Morgan McKenzie won a silver in Junior Men middleweight.
In the Juvenile Men category, Cole Thompson picked up a silver, while Luke Ferguson took silver in Novice Juvenile Men and Rachelle Wightman silver in Novice Juvenile Women.
Coaches Dean Yakura and Tim Udell had extra praise for Cole Thompson who, despite an early loss, fought his way out of the B pool to claim a silver medal.
The Intermediate Boys class saw Wade Thompson snag a silver in middleweight and Kalli Van Stone do likewise in Intermediate Girls.
Bronze medals were recorded by Andrea Bradley (Novice Senior Women), Wyatt Thompson (Intermediate Boys middle-heavy), Devin Dunlop (Intermediate middleweight) and Lucas Pool (Novice Boys).
“The Vernon and Lake Country judo clubs are looking forward to hosting an even larger BC Team selection event in 2009,” said Comley.
