IN OLYMPIC FESTIVAL NAT'L FINALS BY CEDELF TUPAS

With Bacolod City bets bringing home five golds and three silvers and a bronze in the judo and wrestling competitions in the Philippine Olympic Festival Visayas qualifying leg, prospects are bright for the city's bets in the national finals in Manila.
That's the assessment of head coach Efren Diongon, the National Judo Association vice-president for the Visayas, who said that with extensive training and support, his players can be at par with the best in the country.
Diongon, who headed the Bacolod judo delegation to the POF, singled out Filipino-Lebanese Mohammad El Helou, who captured the golds in judo's 100 kg. division and the open weight juniors' tilt, as a good candidate for the national pool.
"He has the skill and is very willing to learn. I like his attitude," Diongon said of El Helou, who was promoted to green belt three weeks ago. "My plan is to include him in the national pool".
The other judo gold medalists from Bacolod are Romy Kok Murillo (openweight senior division) and Wella Day Avellana (women's 70 kgs.). Winning silver medals were Yolanda Benjamin (women's -63 kgs.) Richard Dulaca (open weight senior) Brylle Flores (men's -60 kg.) Brian Marquez won a bronze in the -66 kg. category.
The players were members of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Criminology Judo-Wrestling Club, Diongon said.
The city's lone gold in wrestling came courtesy of Manila-based Edgardo Alegayda, a member of the national pool in judo. Diongon said Alegayda was forced to compete in the wrestling event because there is a rule that disallows members of the national pool in judo from competing in the same event.
Alegayda, 19, has been into judo for more than 10 years and first competed in the Batang Pinoy in Laguna when he was 8, Diongon said.
Although the Bacolod City Government was unable to provide financial support for the Olympic Festival, Diongon said he pushed through with the campaign using personal resources.
"The city government has been helping us. We understood that they were not able to help us this time because the invitation from POF organizers came late," he added.
Diongon also appealed for the city's help when the team competes in the national finals in Manila from Nov. 12-18.
