TOKYO - Japan have named 12 athletes for the judo competition at the Beijing Olympics including world champion Ryoko Tani despite her suffering a defeat at the national championships on Sunday.
The Japan Judo Federation named Takuaki Hiraoka for the men’s 60kg, Athens Olympic champion Masato Uchishiba for the 66kg, Yusuke Kanamaru for the 73kg, and Takashi Ono for the 81kg.
It also selected 2005 90kg world champion Izumi Hiroshi, and world 100kg champion Keiji Suzuki in his favourite discipline.
But the federation did not pick Emi Yamagishi, who defeated Tani in the final of the national championships by scoring a yoko twice in the bout.
It was a repeat of last year’s event when Tani bowed to Tomoko Fukumi in the final yet still qualified for the world championships.
Meanwhile, Athens Olympic gold medallist Kosei Inoue kept alive slim hopes of qualifying for the summer Games in Beijing by winning the men’s over 100kg category, beating Shigekazu Shoda by an ippon in the final.
“It was really tough. I tried hard to keep my hopes alive until the last day. I’m determined to do my best until the last day,” said Inoue, who was fifth in the world championships.
Selected for the women’s competition in Beijing were Misato Nakamura in the 52kg, Aiko Sato in the 57kg, Ayumi Tanimoto in the 63kg, Masae Ueno in the 70kg, and Sae Nakazawa in the 78kg.
