Joshua Schuett is an A student in the classroom and the dojo.
The 12-year-old member of the Stirling Judo Club was honoured last weekend as winner of the 2007 Judoka of the Year award, presented annually by the SJC to the student who best demonstrates discipline, enthusiasm and consistency.
"Joshua has thoroughly impressed his fellow club members," said SJC sensei Gil Mooney. "He carries the same positive attitude throughout all aspects of his life. He carries an A average at public school in Campbellford and finds time to help out some of his fellow students when needed.
"This same helping attitude carries through with one of Joshua's other passions, as he holds a junior black belt in karate and helps out as an instructor as well."
Schuett is also an excellent swimmer and plans to work summers as a lifeguard when he starts attending high school.
Mooney said Schuett's recognition marks the 20th anniversary of the SJC's Judoka of the Year presentation.
"It started while the club was still at the YMCA in Belleville and followed the club when it moved to Stirling in 1992," said Mooney. "The award was developed as a way for either non-competitors or competitors to earn recognition for dedication. It's presented in memory of the late sensei, Jim Driscoll, who was a pioneer of judo in the Quinte area."
Mooney said Driscoll was a judo organizer at the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montreal and received the Order of Canada for his commitment to developing youth programs for judo.
Gilbert also cited the Stirling Legion (Branch 228) for attaching a bursary to the award.
"It allows the recipient the option of either attending Camp Budokan for one week in the summer or applying the money to an educational bursary," said Mooney. "Camp Budokan is a judo camp where those in attendance have the opportunity to train with Olympians and Olympic coaches."
Helping to present the 2007 award to Schuett was Canadian national judo team member Meaghan Fulton Adair who also demonstrated several of her techniques to club members following the ceremony.
