PSB finalises schedule for Under-17 events

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) on Tuesday finalised the schedule of Inter-Provincial Under-17 events for the year 2007-08. The sports gala will kick off with a judo competition to be held in Lahore from November 5 to 7 this year.
A meeting of the Provincial Sports Boards was held at the PSB headquarters, under the chairmanship of PSB director general Salahuddin to chalk out the schedule. PSB managing director Khawar Shah, Sindh sports secretary Syed Ghulam Akbar Shah Bukhari, NWFP Sports Board director Rashida Ghaznavi, Balochistan Sports Board director Dr Shoaib Ahmed Gola, AJK Sports Board director Ch Muhammad Ishaque, Islamabad Sports Board secretary Syed Abrar Hussain, FATA Sports Board director Faisal Jamil Shah, FATA sports director Gul Snowber Ikhlas and PSB assistant director Muhammad Azam Dar also attended the meeting. Twelve sports disciplines will be held in major cities including Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and Peshawar. Judo (men and women), karate (men and women), kabaddi, boxing, weightlifting, taekwondo (men and women), hockey, athletics (men and women), volleyball, swimming (men and women), football and wrestling competitions will be organised during the year 2007-08.
The house observed that the players who performed well in Under-17 tournaments were not being given chances by the federations in national competitions. The house requested the PSB director general to consider the inclusion of the best young athletes in national junior and senior sports competitions. The Chairman agreed to the proposal and decided to organise training camps for the Under-17 players to groom them. The participants proposed that baseball, badminton and table tennis might also be included in the schedule.
The PSB director general assured them that efforts would be made for the inclusion of these three games in the programme.
