Disappointment for Israeli judo team
By ALLON SINAI
The national judo team returned to Israel on Monday after one of its most disappointing championships in recent memory. No blue-and-white judoka managed to finish any higher then ninth position in the World Championships in Brazil, a worrying sign with the Beijing Olympics less than a year away.
Arik Ze'evi and Gal Yekutial, who won bronze medals at this year's European Championships, missed the competition through injury, with Adrian Kordon also missing out.
Avisar Shayman was Israel's best performer, finishing the under-81 kilogram event in ninth place. The biggest disappointments of the championships were Yoel Rozvozov and Alice Shlezinger, who failed to live up to the high expectations and finished outside the top 10.
The Israeli judokas will have one final chance to book their place in China by doing well in top European competitions in 2008.
