Asians dominate third day of world judo championships
14 hours ago RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) — Table toppers France were among the nations left on the medals scrapheap as three Asians, and yet another Brazilian grabbed gold at the world judo championships Saturday.
On the third day of competition France were left in the shade as their four entrants failed to get past the quarter-finals - thus failing to gain direct entry to next year's Olympic Games.
In the men's under 66kg category Joao Derly gave the hosts reason to bring the house down with applause after beating Cuban rival Yordanis Arencibia to retain his title by yuko in a sudden death decider.
The Brazilian had a yuko to thank for his sudden death semi-final victory over Armenian Armen Nazaryan, while Arencibia had booked his final spot by beating Iranian Arash Miresmaeili by yuko.
It was Brazil's second men's gold in as many days, following Tiago Camilo's victory in the under-81 kg category.
Both Nazaryan anda Miresmaeili went on to win bronze in their respective matches.
The remainder of the day's gold medals were won by Asian competitors.
In the men's under-73kg category Ki Chun Wang of South Korea beat Elnur Mammadli of Azerbaijan by koka during sudden death.
Mammadli took the silver while Bogiev Rasul of Tajekistam and Japanese Yusuke Kanamaru won bronze medals from their respective matches.
France were again left out of the medals in the women's competition as Junjie Shi of China and Sun Hui Kye of North Korea won respective gold in the under 52 and under 57 kg categories.
Junjie needed an official decision following sudden death in her semi-final showdown against North Korean Kum Ae An, but went on to claim gold over Portuguese rival Telma Monteiro thanks to a yuko - and celebrated in style by jumping on to her trainer.
Kum and Yuka Nishida of Japan went on to claim bronze from their respective matches.
North Korea finally grabbed their first gold of these championships through Sun, who beat Spaniard Isabel Fernandez by ippon.
Sun displayed her joy in similar fashion to Junjie, the North Korean however claiming her third consecutive gold in the category.
Japanese Aiko Sato and Hungary's Bernadett Baczko took the bronze medals.
France meanwhile remain top of the table, but after a day of disappointment, in which they were unlucky with some refreeing decisions, they will be hoping to bounce back.
On the final day Sunday, France will look to Dimitri Dragin in the men's under 60kg and Frederique Jossinet in the women's under 48kg categories.
