RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — Ronda Rousey won the silver medal at the Judo World Championships in the 154-pound division, the first American woman to medal at worlds since 1995.
Rousey, who moved up from 139-pound division earlier this year, defeated the No. 3-ranked player in the world, an Olympic medalist and the reigning world champion on Friday.
"I've always had this in mind ever since I was kid,'' said Rousey, of the Wakefield, Mass., judo club. "My mother (AnnMaria) won worlds in 1984, and that's always been my goal. So I'm a little disappointed not to have won, but I'm happy to have medaled for the first time.''
