First step for a great event

First step for a great event

International judo training camp brings together more than 200 practitioners Over the next week, some of the best current European judo practitioners will be in the Algarvian capital, to participate in the 1st International Judo Training Camp "Cidade de Faro", an event which will "put on the map" this great sporting initiative. This is the intention of the Judo Club of the Algrave (JCA), joint organisers of this event with the Faro local authority. "We hope that this is the first step for a event of great dimension" announced Júlio Marcelino, President of the JCA, in a presentation of the initiative, which took place on Friday in the Hotel Eva. Making this training a regular annual event, with the presence of the best judo practitioners in the world, will allow Faro to be placed "on the route of the great international Judo training camps", added the President. "The city and the county need moments of pride. And the Judo Club of the Algarve and its athletes have given us many moments of pride", stated José Apolinário, President of the Municipal Council of Faro. "This project shows our organisational capacity for great events and brings movement to the city", he added, satisfied for the Council to be supporting an initiative "which places Faro on the map of the big sporting events". "Despite being the first edition, it is already notable. There has been a need for an initiative of this kind in the south of the country, which creates a new space on the national and international panorama", commented Carlos Andrade, a member of the Board of the Portuguese Judo Federation. Accordingly, the next two training camps, in 2007 and 2008, are guaranteed, serving as preparation in each year for the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro and the Peking Olympic Games, respectively. "We wanted to guarantee a precise date - the last week of August - but as these two happenings are scheduled for the first week of September, we decided to anticipate the trainings for June or July", stated Júlio Marcelino. Two hundred athletes present The first edition of this initiative brings to Faro the selections of Portugal, Spain, England, Tunisia, Holland and Mozambique, amongst other regional representations from national and club levels. Of the almost 200 participants registered, special note is made of the presence of Neil Adams from Wales (he was British selector, World Champion and five times European Champion), the Tunisian Houda Miles (current African Champion) and the Spanish Ana Carracosa and Racquel Prieto, both vice-Champions of Europe. Regarding the Portuguese, present will be Nuno Delgado, Bronze medal winner in the Sydney Olympic Games, Telma Monteiro, current European Champion, and Ana Cachola from Faro, European Juniors Champion in 2005, amongst other names. The training camp serves as preparation for the athletes of the National Selection who are going to the European Championships and of the World Juniors and the European Under-23s. The latter will feature the participation of two athletes from the JCA - Tiago Lopes (-66kg) and Ana Cachola (-63kg) - who is defending the title -, both of them beginning their period of preparation for the Olympics. In addition to the training, to take place in the Faro Pavilion (daily, between 09.30 and 11.30 and from 17.30 to 19.30hrs), the event includes demonstration sessions of the sport, namely in the Casa dos Rapazes (Tuesday at 16.00hrs) and in the Jardim Manuel Bivar (Tuesday or Wednesday night). The event is sponsored by the insurers Allianz and by the Caixa Geral de Depósitos.
