BRASILIA, March 2 (Xinhua) -- The 16 years old Brazilian Mayra Aguiar won on Sunday the European competition of Judo that serves as the qualifying tournament for the 2008 Olympic Games.
The girl won the category of 70 Kilograms in the World Cup of judo in Warsaw, Poland. With Sunday's victory, Mayra is practically qualified to represent Brazil in this year's Olympic Games in Beijing.
With her latest accomplishment, Mayra, who is competing with Maria Portela for the Olympic spot, is the newest star in the new generation of Brazilian athletes. The young athlete won the silver medal for her category of judo in the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro last year.
"I always thought something like this would happen in my career, but not so soon. I am very happy. I feel as though I have evolved a lot in my abilities since last year. The foreign exchanges and the training in Europe really helped to complement my day-to-day workouts," said the athlete.
The fighter is waiting to hear from the coaching commission to confirm her presence in the Olympic Games in Beijing. Although the invitation has not been formally announced, she is confident that Sunday's performance will make her the heavy favorite to represent Brazil for the women's 70 kilogram category.
