Britain is to host the European Judo Championships for visually-impaired athletes for the first time in West Sussex, it has been announced.

The 2011 International Blind Sports Association (IBSA) European Judo Championships will take place at the K2 centre in Crawley, West Sussex, from June 15-19, making it a key event for homegrown talent in the run-up to London 2012.

Esther Nicholls, event consultant for UK Sport, said: "The IBSA European Judo Championships will provide an invaluable opportunity for British players to experience international competition on home soil just before the 2012 Paralympic Games.

"The event also provides us with the opportunity to hone the skills of key officials and to train volunteers, which is vital for building capacity within the sport to host events in the future."

The British team won four medals last year to record its best results score at the Europeans.

British Judo events manager Emma Taylor said: "We have never run such a prestigious visually-impaired event before and we are excited to be involved and showcase the top visually-impaired judoka ahead of 2012."
