JUDO: Ronda Rousey Wins Career Third World Cup Gold Medal

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Sunday marked the final leg of the European Tour for World silver medalist Ronda Rousey (Wakefield, Mass. / USA Judo National Team FORCE) and the 21-year-old made the best of it, winning the gold medal in the 70kg division at the Budapest World Cup in Hungary.
The win marks the third career World Cup gold medal for Rousey as she continues to establish herself as a player to watch with less than six months remaining before the Beijing Olympic Games.
Rousey won her first four matches all by ippon (instant win) to advance to the final against Cecilia Blanco (ESP), the #2-ranked player in the world who won a silver medal at last week’s Paris Super World Cup.
“My final match was probably my hardest of the day as it was the only one that went the distance, but I really felt good all day and can’t wait to get home,” Rousey said of her five-minute win against Blanco whom she threw for two yuko (quarter-point) scores.
In earlier matches, Rousey defeated Elina Paulman (FIN) in the first round and armbarred Silvia Schlagnitweit (AUT), a two-time 2007 World Cup medalist, in her next match.
In the quarter-finals, Rousey defeated 2003 World Champion Daniela Krukower (ARG) to advance to the semifinals where she threw Juan Wang (CHN), a fifth-place finisher in Paris, for her fourth ippon of the day.
“I kind of expected to do well here. That seems to be how it’s gone for me in the past, or at least the past two times I won, is that I don’t do really well in the middle of the tour, but I finish with a win,” Rousey said. “The biggest thing both Jimmy and Big Jim [Rousey’s coaches Jimmy Pedro, a former World Champion, and Jim Pedro Sr.] wanted for me was to get lots of match time in while I was here. The goal wasn’t necessarily to win everything, just to get lots of work done to prepare me for the Olympics, but of course, it’s always great to win too!”
Katie Mocco (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center / NYAC) and Marti Malloy (San Jose, Calif. / USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State) competed in the 78kg and 63kg divisions, respectively, but both lost their first matches.
Mocco, a former Pan Am medalist in the 70kg division, lost her opening match to Anastasia Dmitrieva (RUS) by two kokas (smallest points). Dmitrieva then lost her next round to two-time World Champion Yurisel Laborde (CUB), eliminating Mocco.
Malloy lost her match against Nozomi Hirai (JPN) by a koka, but Hirai, who went on to win a bronze medal, lost in the next round, eliminating Malloy.
